After spending a fair chunk of the summer in the company of William Gibson’s books (and especially Pattern Recognition), I felt like making a « Stasi envelope » – Cayce Polard’s way to refer to her susbstitute for a purse in the book. In my mind, it quickly became some sort of paper wallet with a very basic design, articulated with the same kind of concertina folds that you can find in the folders at the end of Moleskine day planners. It might all seem a little trivial but you know what, it seems a lot of people would like to have something like that !
Here’s the result after a few hours spent between Google Sketchup and Pepakura Designer (a fine piece of software that converts your 3D models into patters for papercraft models) : not perfect yet but we’re getting there ! I’m looking forward to putting my hands on an A3 printer so I can roll out the maximum amount of parts on the same page without needing to separate them. The final pattern should be available soon for anybody who feels like downloading it and spending some quality time with an X-acto knife, kraft paper and laminating film. Why did I sort the Stasi envelope in the Year of Awesome category ? Simply because I’ve decided that in 2010, I won’t refrain from making something from scratch if I feel like it, no matter how futile it seems. Cheers !
